History

Scholls Valley Lodge is a historic family property in Oregon wine country.

Located on the Vial Family Farm in the hills of Scholls, the Lodge sits on land that has been lived on, worked, and cared for by the same family for generations.

It is a private and peaceful setting for group stays, gatherings, and intimate celebrations.

ORIGIN STORY

Scholls Valley Lodge Upper Lodge began as a barn built in the mid-1960s.

In 1986, the Vial family purchased the 24-acre property after searching for a home closer to Portland. When they first arrived, the structure was a barn in need of significant work—but they immediately felt a connection to the land and chose to make it their home.

The barn originally included three levels: a basement once used for animals, a main level for equipment, and a loft for hay. Over time, the family began converting the structure into a livable home, adding wings and making gradual improvements while living through very basic conditions in the early years.

Despite the challenges—including unfinished interiors, harsh weather, and ongoing construction—the family moved in and continued building the home together.

LIFE ON THE FARM

Over the next several decades, the property became both a home and a working farm.

The Vial family raised six biological children and seven adopted children, along with cattle and 4-H livestock. The home was constantly full of activity, family, and community.

As the children grew up, the house continued to evolve—slowly improving over time while also reflecting the life lived inside it. Signs of that history remain today throughout the property.

TRANSITION TO THE LODGE

As the family grew and life on the farm changed, Rich and Paula Vial made the decision to thoughtfully remodel the home into a lodge space.

The renovation was completed in 2011, transforming the property into the Scholls Valley Lodge as it exists today.

The goal was to preserve the character and history of the home while creating a space that could be shared with others for meaningful time together.
